Humko Deewana Kar Gaye (2006)

My first contribution to Rum's annual bakwas list is this rather enjoyable but 'oh so silly' rom com

Our story begins with Car Engineer Aditya (Akshay Kumar) who gets engaged to his adorable fiancée Sonia (Bipasha Basu)

Soon after his engagement he's promoted to Canada and Sonia also leaves for Paris to showcase her fashion designs, the two lovers promise to stay in touch

(bollywooddeewana's note:While in Canada the film never shows him thinking of or even communicating with Sonia which makes me doubt how much they loved each other to even get engaged in the first place)

In Canada he meets and falls in love with another woman Jai (Katrina), who as usual doesn't take to him at first  but later warms up to him

They fall head over heels for each other but Jia doesn't tell Aditya she's engaged and about to be married to strict businessman Karan, Aditya too keeps news of his relationship and engagement with Sonia  away from Jia

How will all these melodramatic matters be resolved, find out when or if you dare watch Humko Deewana Kar Gaye (I'm Crazy about you)

Overall a rather silly & sparsely scripted rom com, watch it if anything for the songs, or if you are a Super Akshay fan like me. I really wanted to like this film more but I  couldn't sympathise with any of the lovers in this triangle and I found myself rooting for no one in particular, which usually is a good sign of a good rom com or love saga. As already noted above we get no real sense of how much Aditya and Sonia really love each other and I totally feel Bipasha was wasted in this, they might as well have broken up before his trip to Canada 

As for Katrina's Jia character, I found it rather annoying  that she had no voice of her own, the men in her life (her dad and fiancée) called all the shots and made all the decisions, that said though, I think Katrina was at her dramatic (or should I say melodramatic) best in this

And as for Akshay, I liked  him in this, his enthusiasm in the music numbers plus his good looks made this film a little bearable

And lest i forget it was great seeing some old faces a la Bhagyashree & Helen

Helen in particular had some hilarious moments, first was this classic dialogue, even Helen couldn't keep a straight face after uttering it, I wonder how the director convinced her to say that. I've captured it for your enjoyment below

The music of this film by Anu Malik and Himmesh Reshammiya with lyrics by Sameer made it even more bearable, highlights are the hilarious for your eyes only, the lovely and 90's sounding title track 'Humko Deewana kar gaye' the groovy 'mere nazron mein' (she's a rockstar) and mera saath chalte chalte'. My favourite of the whole lot though is 'Fanaa Fanaa (yeh dil hua fanaa)' simply for Akshay's enthusiasm plus i love the black girls and their funky 'eh to fanaa, eh fan fan fanaa 'dance which I've captured below

Ahh!!! what is a Farah Khan film without some retro goodness added in, looking at one of the Tees maar Khan posters reminded me of Jeetendra and Sridevi Kamasutra style dance poses in Tohfa so i guess we should be expecting one in Tees Maar khan

Asides from the aforementioned, one could easily term the Akshay/Katrina pairing as the Jeetendra/Sridevi style Jodi of our times, not only was Sridevi considered a mascot to Jeetendra in his 8o's career, Katrina is considered one to Akshay's career as well, a look at all the previous films they've both starred in have been hits, and without doubt this looks set to be one as well. Now even though we could liken these two couples i doubt they'ell ever be able to match Jeetendra/Sridevi when it comes to perfectly synchronised dance steps a lot of which you can see here

Enough of my babbling Tees Maar Khan hits cinemas on december 22 and i really can't wait

Yuvvraaj (2008)

Ahh Yuvvraaj, one of last year's eagerly anticipated films which got slaughtered upon its release, the movie flopped and the huge star cast, fabulous songs and breathtaking locations couldn't save it. So what is Yuvvraaj about and why did it flop

Deven (Salman Khan) is in love with Anushka (Katrina Kaif) with whom he's in the same orchestra, Anushka brings him much happiness as he has been rejected by his wealthy father, they plan to marry but Anushka's father does not like Deven


When his father dies, Deven returns home hoping to get his share of his father's property, he makes a pact with Anushka's father (Boman Irani) to give her away if he does not return from London a billionaire


When he returns home Deven alongside his two brothers Danny (Zayed Khan) a spoilt rich brat and Gyanesh (Anil Kapoor) who is autistic. Their father leaves all his fortunes to Gyanesh and leaves Deven & Danny with 5 Crores each

Deven and Danny are angry and full of envy, they both come up with a plan to swindle the money off Gyanesh. Danny suggests a harsh plan for them to kill Gyanesh off but Deven calms him down telling him they must win him over with love

Thus Deven starts displaying loving acts towards Gyanesh, he even takes him back with him to Austria

Also on the lines are wicked family members who want to kill Gyanesh to inherit his wealth

Will Deven & Danny succeed in killing Gyanesh? Will Deven be able to become a billionaire just in time to win Anushka's fathers approval?

Yuvvraaj wasn't an all out bad film, i found it quite tolerable, i think it failed to connect with audiences due to its moralistic Soap opera style storyline and melodrama, another thing that really dragged the film down were the foreign extras, some of them seemed to be laughing or at least looked like they were trying to stop themselves from cracking up, maybe if the film had been set in India it might have been a little different

Salman Khan who i actually like looks really tired and gives a lacklustre performance, he looked like he needed some rest

Zayed Khan was perfect as the spoilt rich boy, most times i felt like knocking him on the head, which i guess means he played his role as the spoilt rich brat well

Katrina is really beautiful in this, although she doesn't have so much to do, she does what's required of her really well. After hearing so much of her beauty and failing to see it, i saw it for the first time in this movie

Anil Kapoor steals the show and outshines everyone else with his believable performance as the autistic brother


The real saving grace of the movie however are the songs and the picturizations, a lot of production clearly went into them as they looked very much like broadway productions, if you like musicals , you'll love the picturizations in Yuvvraaj

A.R. Rahman's music is what i really cherish about this movie, from the upbeat foot tapping 'Shano Shano' to the happy cheerful 'Mastam Mastam' the reflective 'Tu meri dost hai' and the wonderful ballad Tu Muskura



Total Score: 6/10 just because of A.R. Rahman's music

I liked the ending bit where all the characters and all those who had contributed to the film were shown
